Ten years ago, Smile was the season that properly cemented me as a diehard Precure fan—after that brief period in my life when I decided anime was for babies and Real Adults only watched shows with Real People. And I'm glad I got over that phase because Smile was so fun!!! This was back when pixiv was still a big deal so I remember scouring that site week after week to see what beautiful art the fans had come up with and it was GORGEOUS, partially because the show itself was so bright and colourful to begin with (ღ˘◡˘ღ) Fandom at the time was just really fun~ I mean, Tima's incredible Nissan art helped *A* So much talent. And that meme about shipping a ship for the lulz only to find yourself genuinely stuck in is literally me and Miyu/Rei =u=;;;; This was also the first show I bought doujinshi for (Tima's Nissan and Zururi's M/R) and since then, my dj collection has grown so much, I'm too scared to count them proper lmao.
Even before I started the rewatch, I knew Miyu/Rei and Nissan would just try to eff me right over. AND THEY DID!!!!!!!! I tried to contain my super shipping tendencies in the Alts but they were supposed to be real low-effort and eventually they took like 5x the effort??? Why did I even create Alts????? I'm abolishing the Alt system. Outrageous.
But back to the show itself. I generally agree with the criticism that Smile was light on plot and featured two long pointless countdowns but lmao idc. That didn't stop me from bouncing up and down whenever the OP started because I looooooooooove these girls!!!!!!! 😘 I would gladly take a whole second season of their day-to-day hijinks!! Miyuki is still best (Smile) girl and Fukuen Misato's performance is a huge part of that. Love her~ 😘 There's not too much to say here; I loved Smile going in to the rewatch, and I love it even more after. I'll miss these girls ಥ◡ಥ
I'm glad I got to work out my Miyu/Rei headcanons though (◡‿◡✿) They were once my #1 Precure OTP after all, and the original plans I had for them were kinda effed up lmao. More than happy to have a course correction. I might work on them a little more in the future because their first love vibe is ridiculous cute and I die everyday thinking about them.
